ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORITY (SUBCLASS 601)

If the following conditions are met, you may be able to obtain this ETA: 

•  If you’re visiting Australia as a tourist or for business 
• you hold an approved passport. 

Reason for staying in Australia  

If you are visiting Australia as a tourist or for business, you can apply. 

 Holidays, recreation, and seeing family and friends are all examples of tourist activity. 

 The following are examples of business visitor activities: 

•  enquiring about general business or employment opportunities 
• a business contract is being investigated, negotiated, signed, or reviewed 
• activities are undertaken as part of a formal government-to-government meeting 

• Participating in conferences, trade shows, or seminars as long as the organizers are not compensating you for your time. 

Short-term work is not included in business activity. You can apply for a Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) visa if you want to work in Australia (Subclass 400).

Health insurance

During your stay in Australia, you are liable for any medical expenses. Unless your country has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, you will not be covered by Australia’s national health program (Medicare). 

Every time you travel to Australia, we urge that you purchase health insurance. 

Character requirements

You should apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) rather than an ETA if you have any criminal convictions in any nation. You may be denied entrance to Australia if you come on an ETA with criminal convictions.

Debts owed to the Australian government

Before this visa can be granted, you must have no outstanding debts to the Australian government or have made arrangements to repay any existing debts to the Australian government. 

  Including family members, in your application, each family member traveling to Australia with you will require their own ETA. This includes any minors listed on your passport who are under the age of 18

Your ETA is effective for a year. You can visit Australia and remain for up to three months at a time. You can apply for another visa, such as a Visitor visa if you intend to stay in Australia for a longer amount of time (subclass 600). 

 You will need to reapply if your passport expires before your ETA. 

Your ETA allows you to:

• For up to three months at a time, you can visit Australia. 
• Visit Australia for a vacation or to see relatives and friends. 
• In some cases, you can study in Australia for up to three months. 
• job as a true unpaid volunteer, but only if the work would not otherwise be compensated to an Australian resident (you can be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses such as meals and accommodation). 
• While in Australia, you can participate in business visitor events if you: 
• do not work for or give services to an Australian company or organization 
• You must not sell any goods or services to the general public.

The following are examples of business visitor activities:

• As part of a formal government-to-government visit, activities were carried out.

You must comply with all ETA conditions and Australian laws. You cannot stay in Australia for longer than three months on each visit.

You cannot study for more than three months.

• You must adhere to all ETA requirements as well as Australian legislation. 
• Each visit to Australia must be for no more than three months. 
• You are not allowed to study for longer than three months. 

 You are not permitted to work in Australia except for the following purposes: 

• enquiring about general business or career opportunities. 
• A business contract may be investigated, negotiated, signed, or reviewed. 
• As part of a formal government-to-government visit, activities were carried out. 
• Participating in conferences, trade shows, or seminars as long as the organizers are not compensating you for your time.
