From July 31 2023, there will be some exciting changes to the Priority Processing service for VETASSESS Skills assessment for general occupations. These changes will prioritize applicants with urgent needs, while still providing opportunities for other applicants. Read on to understand the new Priority Processing system and how it may impact your visa application journey.

What is Changing with Priority Processing?

From 31 July 2023, the Priority Processing service for VETASSESS skills assessments will be refined to cater to applicants with urgent needs. Under the new system, applicants with evidence of urgent requirements will receive priority. This means that if you find yourself in a situation requiring immediate attention, your application will be given special consideration.

How Does the New Priority Processing System Work?

Applicants without an urgent need can still opt for Priority Processing. However, once places are allocated to those with an urgent need, any remaining slots will be offered to other applicants in the queue on a first-come-first-served basis. This means that while urgent cases will be addressed first, there is still a chance for other applicants to secure priority status if spaces are available.

Urgent Reasons for Applying for Priority Processing

You may be wondering what constitutes an “urgent need” for Priority Processing. Here are some key scenarios that would qualify an applicant for priority status:

Received an Invitation with an Expiry Date: If you have received an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs or an Australian state or territory government, which has an expiry date, you may apply for Priority Processing to ensure your application is promptly assessed.

Visa Expiry within Eight Weeks with No Other Visa Options: If your current visa is set to expire within eight weeks, and you are unable to obtain another visa, you qualify for Priority Processing to prevent any disruptions to your stay in Australia.

Age Milestones: Applicants turning 33, 40, or 45 within eight weeks can apply for Priority Processing to secure their visa before reaching these age milestones.

Expiring English Test Results or Partner Skills Assessment: If your English test result (IELTS or PTE), or Partner Skills Assessment result is expiring within eight weeks, you can apply for Priority Processing to fast-track your application.

Australia is known as the “Land of Opportunity” for a reason. Every dedicated individual is rewarded for his efforts here. Covid 19 broke the morale of the people, the companies were in losses for months, the economy was surrounded by uncertainties for many weeks, but the people did not give up and kept patience. The date when individuals received the fruit for their perseverance was “March 18, 2022.”

The Australian government has issued new legislation that would allow temporary skilled visa holders of category 482 and 457 visas to apply for their PR process more efficiently.

To understand this new change, first, we have to know the impact of this change on employer-sponsored programs (i.e., Subclass 186 and 187 visas)

To be eligible for Sub-class 186 and 187 visas, a professional must be recommended by a reputable Australian employer. These visa programs allow individuals to be nominated and apply for permanent residency through different streams such as-

What were the mandatory conditions before this amendment?

Prior to the introduction of this new law, an applicant is required to be the holder of a Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa in the Medium-term stream to be eligible for nomination under the TRT stream.

But with new modifications, along with Subclass 482 visa holders, specific Subclass 457 (Temporary Work Skilled) visa holders will also be eligible to apply for the Temporary Residence Transition Stream (TRT). More skilled workers can now be nominated and apply for a TRT visa under the new law.

The following is a technical description of the qualifying criteria.

Applicants who meet the following criteria will be eligible for permanent residency under the TRT visa stream beginning July 1, 2022:

Existing short-term subclass 482 (TSS) visa holders who worked for a qualifying Australian employer for a year between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021 will be eligible for permanent residency.

Also, a person who has or applied for a subclass 457 visa was approved on April 18, 2017, will be eligible to apply for PR.

This is a major shift for Sub-class 482 visa holders because they now fall within the short-term stream regardless of whether their nominated occupation is on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
