Australia has introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) visa to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) from 7 December 2024. These changes make it easier for skilled workers to meet Australia’s job market needs and provide clear pathways to permanent residency.

Key Changes in the Skills in Demand Visa

1. New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): This updated list includes 456 occupations in high demand, covering industries like healthcare, construction, and IT security. It replaces older lists to better match Australia’s current job needs.

2. Three Simple Pathways: The SID visa is divided into three clear streams:

  • Specialist Skills Pathway: For highly skilled roles earning at least AUD $135,000 per year. General labor roles are excluded.
  • Core Skills Pathway: Covers a wide range of occupations on the CSOL with a salary threshold of AUD $73,150.
  • Labour Agreement Stream: Businesses can negotiate specific agreements for roles not in standard categories, now renamed as the Skills in Demand Labour Agreement Stream.

3. Reduced Work Experience: From 23 November 2024, applicants only need one year of full-time work experience in their field, making it easier to qualify.

4. Pathway to PR: The SID visa makes it easier to gain permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186). Work for your sponsor for two out of three years, and you can apply for PR without worrying about occupation lists.

Eligibility for the Skills in Demand Visa

To qualify, you need:

  • Employer Sponsorship: Your employer must nominate you for a skilled role.
  • Relevant Skills: You need the required qualifications and experience.
  • English Proficiency: Meet the set English language levels.
  • Health & Character Clearance: Pass all health and character checks by the Department of Home Affairs.

Why This Visa is Beneficial

Employers can address labour shortages with faster hiring processes, while skilled workers get more opportunities to contribute and settle in Australia permanently.
