New English Test Scores for Australian Visas 2025: PTE, TOEFL and New Options Explained

Australia revised its accepted English tests and per-skill scores on 7 August 2025. The update affects skilled, employer-sponsored and graduate visas. Choose the test that suits your strengths and book early.
What stayed the same
IELTS band scores remain six in each skill for Competent English. Keep your IELTS booking if that format fits you.
What changed
PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT now use new component scores. The department also added three more tests: CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic, and the Michigan English Test (MET). Remote or “at-home” versions are not accepted.
Validity rules you must know
- Sit your exam at an authorised centre; remote tests never count.
- Scores gained on or before 6 Aug 2025 stay valid within normal three-year windows.
- Check the exact English level your visa subclass demands.
How to pick the right test
- Confirm the level required for your visa (Competent, Proficient or Superior).
- Note the per-skill scores you must hit.
- Match those targets to the test style you prefer.
- Book early and leave time for a retake if needed.
- Align your booking with your planned lodgement date.
Why strong English still matters
Competent English satisfies most 482 and 186 nominations. Higher levels boost SkillSelect points for visas 189, 190 and 491. Better scores improve job interviews and employer interest.
